The Summer Slowdown: Why Immigration Takes Longer in Barcelona

At NIE Barcelona we understand how stressful it is to wait for an appointment or a resolution in your immigration process. And to make matters worse, summer tends to slow everything down even more.

If you’ve noticed that everything seems slower in July and August… you’re absolutely right. And here’s why:

Staff turnover at the police immigration offices
In Spain, most of the officers who handle immigration procedures at the Policía Nacional (National Police) work on yearly rotations. Every July, the experienced officers are reassigned and new ones take their place at the immigration desks. Since this is not just any job and requires specific knowledge, the newcomers need time to learn the ropes and adapt to the procedures. During this training and transition period, the overall pace of processing slows down noticeably.

Summer holidays (yes, also for the officials!)

July and especially August are the peak summer months in Spain, when a large part of the workforce takes their annual holidays. This includes public office staff. As a result, the number of available workers in immigration offices drops, sometimes drastically, and fewer appointments and fewer case resolutions happen during this period.

What does this mean for you?

Patience is key. We know it’s already hard enough to deal with the usual waiting times, but during summer everything stretches even further. At NIE Barcelona we keep doing everything we can, investing all our energy and persistence to find you an appointment as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, if the system simply doesn’t release more appointments than it already has, there is nothing anyone can do to force it.

We hope you understand the situation, and rest assured that we’ll keep looking and doing our best to secure a slot for you as soon as one becomes available.

Thank you for your trust and fingers crossed we find your appointment soon!
