If your TIE is already expired or it is about to expire, traveling outside of Spain and then come back to the country with an expired TIE can get tricky. That’s where the Autorización de Regreso or Return Authorization comes in.

What is the Autorización de Regreso?

The Autorización de Regreso is a special travel permit issued by Spanish immigration authorities. It allows you to re-enter Spain while your new residence or stay permit is being processed. It’s designed for those who need to travel abroad and come back to Spain but do not currently have their valid TIE card physically with them.

When Can You Request It?

You can apply for the Autorización de Regreso only after you’ve officially submitted the renewal or extension of your residence/stay permit. If your TIE is expired and you haven’t done anything to renew it, you won’t be eligible.

In most cases, when switching from a stay permit (estancia) to a residence permit (residencia) — for example, after finishing your studies and applying for the job-seeking visa — you must have already completed the fingerprinting appointment (toma de huellas) before you can request the Autorización de Regreso.

However, there are specific and exceptional cases in which the Autorización de Regreso can be granted with just the receipt confirming that the new residence permit application has been submitted. Since these situations are not the norm and vary depending on the immigration office, we strongly recommend contacting us to assess your case before applying.

Can You Travel Anywhere with the Regreso?

Not exactly.

  • Travel outside the Schengen area: The Autorización de Regreso is mandatory if you don’t have your valid TIE.
  • Travel within the Schengen zone: The Autorización de Regreso is not required. You can usually travel with:
    • Your passport
    • Your expired TIE
    • The proof of renewal or your fingerprinting receipt

That said, airlines and foreign border agents may not always recognize or understand the Spanish process, so even within Schengen, there’s always some level of risk when traveling without a valid TIE. We highly recommend you to contact with the airline you are going to travel with to make sure that you don´t need anything more to travel with an expired TIE inside the Schengen zone.

To obtain an Autorización de Regreso, you will need to book an appointment at the National Police immigration office (Oficina de Extranjería de la Policía Nacional). This is not always easy, as available slots are often limited. Feel free to contact us if you need assistance with securing this re-entry permit.
