NIE Barcelona Ends Direct Driver’s License Exchange Service

NIE Barcelona would like to inform all clients and readers that we no longer manage the driver’s license exchange (canje) process in the way we once did.

Why the Change?

Until mid-2025, our team could book the appointment at the Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT) entirely on behalf of our clients. However, since the summer of 2025, the rules have changed:

• The appointment must now be booked using the licence holder’s own Digital Certificate (Certificado Digital) or Cl@ve credentials.
• A representative may still complete the booking, but only if the licence holder grants explicit authorization through their Digital Certificate or Cl@ve.
• Without that digital authorization, representatives cannot secure the appointment.

Because of these requirements, NIE Barcelona has stopped offering the full driver’s license exchange service we provided in the past.

Current Rules for Driving Licence Exchange in Spain

EU/EEA Citizens. Exchange is not required unless:

• The licence has expired.
• The holder becomes a Spanish resident and needs renewal or updates.
• The licence was obtained before Spain’s minimum driving age (18).

UK Citizens;

• Since Brexit, UK licences are treated as third-country licences.
• Residents in Spain must exchange their UK licence for a Spanish one.
• A UK licence is valid only for the first six months of residence.
• The process must be completed in person, although some steps can be started online.

How NIE Barcelona Can Help

While we no longer book appointments for canje directly, we assist clients in obtaining their Digital Certificate (IDCAT) so they can:

• Authorize a representative to book the appointment, or
• Book it themselves.

Our Digital Certificate service includes:

• Document guidance
• Appointment scheduling
• Accompaniment to the OAC office (City Hall)

To obtain the Digital Certificate, you must hold a valid NIE card (EU citizens) or TIE (non-EU citizens).
