If you are living in Spain or planning to move here, registering in the Spanish Social Security system is a key step. Social Security registration is what gives you access to public healthcare, sick leave, maternity benefits, and other social protections.

In Spain, there are three main ways to register for Social Security, depending on your situation.

1. Registering for Social Security by Working in Spain

The most common way to register for Spanish Social Security is through employment.

If you work for a company based in Spain that pays social contributions in Spain, you will automatically be covered by the Spanish Social Security system.

How this process works:

  • To start working, you must have a Spanish Social Security Number (NUSS).
  • Your employer will request this number or ask you to provide it.
  • Once you are hired, the company registers you with Social Security.

From that moment, you start paying contributions and gain access to Spanish public healthcare and benefits.

In this case, you do not need to register yourself, your employer handles the Social Security registration.

2. Registering for Spanish Social Security Using the S1 Form

If you do not work in Spain, you may still be able to access Spanish Social Security by transferring coverage from your home country. This option is available if you are currently paying Social Security contributions in your country of origin.

In this situation, you must contact the Social Security authority in your home country and request the S1 form.

The S1 form is an official document that:

  • Confirms that you are covered by Social Security in your home country
  • Allows you to transfer healthcare coverage to Spain
  • Enables you to register in the Spanish Social Security system without working here

Once issued, the S1 form must be presented to Spanish Social Security to activate your coverage.

3. Registering as a Family Member (Spouse or Children)

You can also register in the Spanish Social Security system if you are a dependent family member of someone who works and pays Social Security in Spain.

This applies to spouses or children of workers registered in Spanish Social Security. In these cases, Social Security coverage is granted through the working family member, provided the family relationship is officially documented.

Why Social Security Registration in Spain Is Important
Being registered with Spanish Social Security allows you to:

  • Access public healthcare
  • Obtain a CatSalut / health card, also know as Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual (in Catalonia)
  • Receive benefits related to illness, maternity, or family dependency
  • Be legally recognized within the Spanish welfare system
